Burg Krukenburg
Bad Karlshafen, Germany, Germany
Burg Krukenburg is a historic hilltop castle ruin perched on Waltersberg hill near Helmarshausen, a district of Bad Karlshafen in Germany's Kassel region.
Built between 1215 and 1220 to protect an existing church modeled after Jerusalem's Holy Sepulchre and a nearby monastery, it lost importance after the Reformation dissolved the monastery, gradually falling into decay.
The site preserves a bergfried tower converted into a 1968 lookout with stunning panoramic views over Reinhardswald forest and Diemeltal valley, plus remnants of walls, a ring ditch, and church ruins, accessible via a short 250-meter hike from free parking and open seasonally from late April to October.
