Burg Landshut
Bernkastel-Kues, Germany, Germany
Burg Landshut is a 13th-century ruined castle atop a hill overlooking Bernkastel-Kues in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, built on 4th-century Roman fort foundations named Princastellum to guard the Moselle Valley.
Constructed after 1276 under Archbishop Heinrich von Finstingen and completed around 1320 by Elector Balduin, it served as the Trier archbishops' residence and administrative center until a devastating 1692 fire led to abandonment.
The rectangular fort with 1.8-meter-thick quartzite walls, six towers, 30-meter keep, and palas now offers hiking access, panoramic vineyard views, and a modern restaurant amid its layered Roman-to-medieval history.
