Originally mentioned in records in 1266 as part of the town's defensive fortifications, it was transformed into a Renaissance-style residence in the late 16th century while retaining its medieval roots. The castle features an attractive courtyard, historic architecture, a Renaissance portal, and a traditional fountain, making it one of Lauterbach's most recognizable landmarks. Although it suffered significant damage during the 1848 revolutions, it was later rebuilt and preserved in its present form. Today, it remains associated with the noble Riedesel family and houses part of their administrative and archival collections.
