Burg Lemberg
Lemberg, Germany, Germany
Burg Lemberg near Lemberg in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is a medieval hill castle constructed around 1200 by Count Henry I of Zweibrücken on a Celtic and Roman-settled site at 458 meters elevation, first documented as Castrum Lewenberc in 1230.
It served as a residence for counts like Simon I of Zweibrücken-Bitsch from 1333 and Jakob I who remodeled it into a Renaissance palace by 1541, featuring a unique 95-meter-deep shaft cistern with a 200-meter adit for water supply.
Damaged in the Thirty Years' War by 1636 and razed by French troops in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession, its remnants including chapel foundations were quarried for local use until 20th-century restorations created a visitor center for medieval events.
