Burg Lichtenfels
Lichtenfels, Germany, Germany
Burg Lichtenfels is a medieval hilltop castle ruin overlooking the town of Lichtenfels in Hesse, Germany, situated above the Orke Valley near the Waldeck-Frankenberg district.
First built around 1189 by Corvey Abbey's Abbot Witukind von Spiegel as a defensive stronghold, it was soon destroyed in local feuds and rebuilt between 1223 and 1230 by Abbot Hermann I, later becoming a key possession of the Counts of Waldeck after 1267.
Over centuries, it endured destruction in early 17th-century conflicts and partial reconstructions up to 1914, now standing as a private property with limited access, offering scenic hikes and historical intrigue amid the Örksche Schweiz landscape.
