Burg Lindenfels
Lindenfels, Germany
Burg Lindenfels, located in Lindenfels, Hesse, Germany, dates back to around 1080 when it was first mentioned as a castle called “Sliburc,” likely originally made of wood and earth.
The castle has a rich history linked to significant noble families, including Konrad von Staufen, brother to Emperor Barbarossa, and later the Wittelsbach dynasty, who controlled the castle for nearly 600 years starting in 1277. Over time, the castle was continuously expanded, notably with the town walls in the 14th century and fortification upgrades in the 15th and 16th centuries due to warfare.
Despite several occupations during conflicts in the 14th, 16th centuries, and the Thirty Years' War, the castle was never destroyed but gradually fell into ruin by the 18th century as it lost strategic importance. Restoration efforts began in the late 19th century and have continued sporadically to stabilize the ruins.
Today, Burg Lindenfels offers visitors scenic views of the Odenwald region, with visible remains including fortified walls, a bastion, and the impressive town fortification remnants, making it a notable historical and cultural landmark in the area.
