Burg Lohra
Großlohra, Germany, Germany
Burg Lohra is a large medieval hill castle ruin spanning ten hectares on a 410-meter mountain spur above Großlohra in Thuringia's Nordhausen district, Germany, first documented in 1116 as the residence of the Counts of Lare with possible earlier Germanic fortifications.
Expanded in the 11th-12th centuries into the southwest Harz's largest castle with a Romanesque double chapel separating nobility above from commoners below, a bergfried tower stump, inner core, outer bailey, and orchard grounds, it passed through families like Beichlingen, Klettenberg, and Hohnstein until the 16th century.
Today preserved as a meeting and event venue with group accommodations like Eseltreiberhäuser, it offers sweeping views over the Hainleite ridge and Südharz landscape in a protected area.
