Burg Löwenstein
Löwenstein, Germany
Burg Löwenstein in Löwenstein, Germany, was built around 1090 by the Counts of Calw as a fortified administrative center on the salt trading route from Heilbronn to Hall.
It gave its name to the settlement Löwenstein, which was granted town rights by King Rudolf I in 1287 during his visit to the castle. The castle hosted three dynasties of the Counts of Löwenstein through the Middle Ages and changed hands several times, passing to the Bishopric of Würzburg and then to King Rudolf of Habsburg.
It became part of the Electoral Palatinate in 1441 and was extensively expanded in the late 15th century.
During this time, tensions with neighboring Württemberg led to fortification improvements. The castle was captured by Duke Ulrich of Württemberg in 1504 and partially destroyed by fire in 1512. Its ruins were later used as building material for local constructions, but the site remains a significant heritage landmark, featuring remnants of the original towers and walls as a reminder of its medieval importance on a key trade route.
