Burg Maus
Sankt Goarshausen, Germany, Germany
Burg Maus, towering above Wellmich near Sankt Goarshausen in Germany's UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine Valley, was built between 1353 and 1388 as St. Peterseck (later nicknamed "Mouse" after nearby Burg Katz or "Cat") by Trier's Archbishops Boemund II, Kuno II von Falkenstein, and Werner von Falkenstein to enforce Rhine toll rights and counter the rival Counts of Katzenelnbogen.
Unlike many Rhine castles, it survived wars intact though fell into decay by the 18th century, undergoing faithful restoration from 1900-1906 by architect Wilhelm Gärtner, with WWII shell damage later repaired.
Today, the majestic slate-built complex—featuring a 33-meter bergfried tower, palas with chapel, and inner courtyard—hosts visitors, falconry shows with eagles and owls, and panoramic Rhine views.
