Burg Monschau
Monschau, Germany
Burg Monschau is a historic hilltop castle in Monschau, Germany, first recorded in 1217 and originally built around the end of the 12th century by the Dukes of Limburg.
It was expanded in the 14th century into a strong fortress for the Counts of Jülich, featuring mighty ring walls and battlements. The castle was besieged and captured by Emperor Charles V in 1543 during the Guelders Wars, suffering damage and plundering along with the town.
In the 19th century, the French administration seized and sold it, and the new private owners removed its roofs to avoid building taxes, causing it to fall into ruin. Restoration efforts started in the early 20th century, and since after World War I part of the castle has functioned as a youth hostel.
Today, the castle is a cultural landmark hosting concerts and events in its courtyard during summer, preserving its medieval heritage while serving as a lively community space.
Although the inside is not generally open to the public due to its current use, the castle and its courtyard offer picturesque views of Monschau and remain a key historical site in the region.
