Burg Mörnsheim, also known as Staffelburg, is a medieval castle ruin located on the Schlossberg hill above the town of Mörnsheim in Bavaria, Germany. Perched about 510 meters above sea level, it overlooks the scenic Gailach Valley and was once an important fortified stronghold guarding the western borders of the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt. The castle’s origins likely date back to the 10th century, although it was first officially mentioned in records in 1225. Over the following centuries, bishops of Eichstätt expanded and strengthened the fortress with defensive walls, towers, a moat, and residential buildings, making it one of the region’s most significant medieval fortifications. After losing its strategic importance in the 17th century, the castle gradually fell into decline and was partly dismantled in 1760. Today, visitors can explore surviving sections of the ring walls, defensive structures, and other remains that reflect its former grandeur. Conservation efforts since the 1980s have helped preserve the site, which is now a popular historical and scenic attraction in the Altmühl Valley region.
