Burg Münchhausen
Wachtberg, Germany, Germany
Burg Münchhausen is the oldest castle in Wachtberg near Bonn, Germany, first documented in 893 AD as "Munichhusen" belonging to Prüm Abbey and originally designed as a moated water castle along the Swist River.
First mentioned in the Prümer Urbar and later passing to the Counts of Are-Hochstaden before entering Cologne Electorate ownership in 1246 via donation, it functioned as a bulwark and toll station on the coronation road to Aachen, with surviving tuffstone bergfried, gate tower, and Roman aqueduct-reused foundations from the 12th-13th centuries.
Acquired by the von der Leyen family in 1525, its remnants now house a riding stable, restaurant, and event venue within a modernized complex protected as a heritage site.
