Burg Neuenahr
Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Germany, Germany
Burg Neuenahr, also known as Are Castle (Burg Are), is a medieval hilltop ruin overlooking Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, built around 1100 by Count Dietrich I of Are.
First documented in 1121, this rectangular fortress features remnants of defensive walls, the Gymnicher Porz gatehouse, Schellenturm tower, and a Romanesque chapel, once including a heated bishop's chamber tied to the Archbishopric of Cologne.
Heavily damaged by French shelling in 1690 and blown up in 1714 under Elector Joseph Clemens, it now offers hiking trails with panoramic Ahr Valley views from its elevated position.
