Burg Neuenstein
Germany, Germany
Burg Neuenstein, also called Neuwallenstein, is a high medieval hilltop castle ruin on a 343-meter peak in the Knüllgebirge mountains near Saasen in Neuenstein, Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, Hesse, Germany.
Likely built around 1250 by Albert I von Wallenstein, former Count of Schauenburg, it soon passed to Hersfeld Abbey and later served Hessian landgraves as a jagdsitz (hunting lodge), forestry office, and administrative site after defensive structures were removed in 1745.
The preserved core now functions as a modern conference center following municipal purchase and renovation in 2000.
