Burg Nordeck
Allendorf, Germany, Germany
Burg Nordeck is a well-preserved medieval hill castle overlooking the village of Nordeck in Allendorf (Lumda), Gießen district, Hesse, Germany, with origins dating to the 12th century as the seat of the Lords of Nordeck.
Featuring a compact layout with a round bergfried tower from the 12th-13th century, robust ring walls, neck ditch, shield wall, and later 14th-17th century buildings around a courtyard including a Romanesque chapel based on the "Roman foot" measure, it passed to Hessian landgraves in the 13th century for strategic control of routes from Mainz to Amöneburg.
Frequently changing hands through noble families, it became a boarding school (Landschulheim) in 1925 and remains privately owned by the Counts of Schwerin, showcasing romantic architecture amid the landscape though interior access is limited.
