Burg Olbrück
Niederdürenbach, Germany, Germany
Burg Olbrück near Niederdürenbach in Germany's Eastern Eifel region is one of the oldest and largest hill castles, built around 1100 by the Counts of Wied on a 460-meter phonolite volcanic cone overlooking the Brohl Valley, later passing to the Lords of Olbrück and becoming a Cologne fief.
Dominated by its 34-meter main residential tower from the mid-14th century with five vaulted floors, a viewing platform, and 5-meter-thick walls, the rhomboid fortress endured multiple destructions and rebuilds across centuries.
Protected since 1980 within a nature reserve, it now features a museum in the tower, free grounds access, and guided tours, serving as a striking Brohltal landmark amid hiking trails.
