Burg Plesse
Bovenden, Germany, Germany
Burg Plesse is a medieval castle ruin perched on a 350-meter-high hilltop spur above Bovenden in Lower Saxony, Germany, about 7 km north of Göttingen, first built around 1015 by Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn using local pale limestone.
Home to the Lords of Plesse for 400 years during the Middle Ages, the site features a prominent 23-meter-tall bergfried tower with walls up to 4 meters thick, along with remnants of walls and towers, offering sweeping views over the Leine Valley.
Restored in the 19th and 20th centuries after centuries of decline, it now serves as a popular hiking destination with a restaurant in the Burgschänke, accessible year-round for visitors exploring the scenic Göttinger Forest area.
