Burg Reichenstein
Trechtingshausen, Germany, Germany
Burg Reichenstein, also known as Falkenburg, is a medieval castle ruin turned museum perched above Trechtingshausen on Germany's UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine, likely built in the 11th-13th century by Vogts of Cornelimünster Abbey to protect nearby villages.
Infamous as a robber baron stronghold under the Hohenfels family, it was besieged and destroyed in 1282 by Emperor Rudolf of Habsburg for Rhine toll abuses, then passed through feuds between Mainz, Cologne, and Palatinate rulers until French troops razed it in 1689.
Restored in neo-Gothic style from 1899 by industrialist Baron Nicolaus Kirsch-Puricelli, the privately owned site now houses a collection of historic cast-iron stoves and hosts visitors with Rhine views.
