Burg Reifenstein, also known as Castel Tasso, is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in South Tyrol, located near Vipiteno (Sterzing) in northern Italy.

First documented in the early 12th century, the fortress was built to control and protect an important trade route through the Wipptal Valley and quickly became a significant regional stronghold. Over the centuries, the castle passed through the hands of various noble families before being acquired by the Teutonic Order in 1470. The Order expanded and enhanced the complex, adding impressive late Gothic features while preserving its defensive character.

Because it was never conquered or destroyed, much of its original medieval structure survives today. The castle is renowned for its historic interiors, including the beautifully decorated Green Hall, medieval living quarters, chapel, armor collection, and original kitchen. Still owned by the Thurn und Taxis family, Burg Reifenstein offers visitors a rare and authentic glimpse into life in a medieval Alpine fortress.
