Burg Rodenstein
Fränkisch-Crumbach, Germany, Germany
Burg Rodenstein is a medieval castle ruin enveloped by ancient beech trees in the Odenwald forest between Fränkisch-Crumbach and Reichelsheim, Hesse, Germany, known as the "Sagenburg des Odenwaldes" for its legends.
Built around 1240 by the Lords of Rodenstein and Crumbach as a defensive Trutzburg against nearby Schloss Reichenberg—with support from the Counts of Katzenelnbogen—it underwent multiple expansions before abandonment after the last inhabitant, Adam von Rodenstein, died of the plague with his family in 1635.
Never destroyed in war, it gradually became a stone quarry; today freely accessible amid its romantic woodland setting, it inspires tales of the "Wildes Heer" spectral procession warning of wars and a resident ghost, with the adjacent Hofgut Rodenstein serving as a popular excursion inn for weddings and hikes.
