Burg Röthgen
Eschweiler, Germany, Germany
Burg Röthgen in Eschweiler's Röthgen district, Germany, is a classic Low Rhine water castle originating in the 14th century to protect Jülich territories, with its main structure rebuilt around 1514 by Wilhelm von der Horst zu Hurt as a four-winged main castle and open three-winged outer bailey separated by a moat and accessed via a stone bridge.
Damaged during World War II battles, it was sold in 1950 to fund repairs elsewhere and repurchased in 1954 by Peter Kugel, who led a 1968-1969 restoration with local support. Today the privately owned monument serves as a residence and riding stable, preserving Carolingian wall remnants found in 1855 amid its scenic layout.
