Burg Schadeck
Germany, Germany
Burg Schadeck is a medieval hilltop castle ruin in Hesse, Germany, located above the River Lahn in the small town of Runkel, in the Limburg‑Weilburg district.
It was built between 1276 and 1288 by Heinrich von Westerburg as a so‑called “Trutzburg” or counter‑castle aimed at pressuring the nearby Runkel Castle, which at the time was held by a relative, and the name “Schadeck” reflects this hostile purpose, meaning roughly “a corner to harm [Runkel] Castle.”
The castle sits on a steep promontory about 50 meters above the river and has long been a ruin, yet it remains a visible landmark in the Lahn valley and is often included in local‑history and walking‑tour routes around the Runkel area.
