First documented in 1225 and associated with the von Schönfels family serving as castellans under the Bishop of Naumburg, it features a rendered keep, chapel, and defensive structures restored to match historic appearances using specialized lime-trass plaster while preserving original stonework and blocked openings.

Owned by the local community, it now functions as a museum showcasing 800 years of history, archaeological finds like an ancient kitchen, and offers tower views, a restaurant, chapel weddings, and hiking access as a well-maintained cultural monument.
