Verified Burg Sponeck

Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl, Germany

Burg Sponeck is a hilltop castle ruin located in Sasbach am Kaiserstuhl, Germany, with origins dating back to the late 13th century, officially after 1281.

It stands on a rocky spur above the Rhine valley and was built following a peace treaty involving King Rudolf I aimed at securing royal control and regional stability. Excavations in the 1970s uncovered remains of a late Roman military fortification beneath the medieval castle, indicating the site's strategic importance since Roman times.

The medieval castle itself was mostly destroyed over time, with only ruins remaining today. It survived the Thirty Years' War thanks to already being a ruin and was significantly restored in the early 20th century by artist Hans Adolf Bühler, who lived there and used it as an atelier.

The castle, still privately owned, opens occasionally for tours and cultural events, offering views over the Rhine and the Kaiserstuhl region. The original Roman fortifications and medieval remnants make it a significant historical site representing layers of regional defense and settlement history.
