Burg Stadeck
Stadecken-Elsheim, Germany, Germany
Burg Stadeck is a former moated castle in the village of Stadecken‑Elsheim in Rheinhessen, Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany, built in 1276 by Count Eberhard I von Katzenelnbogen on a headland above the Selz River at about 147 meters above sea level.
Originally standing freely on this peninsula, the castle later became fully surrounded by the growing village and was used for centuries as a local administrative and lordly center, closely tied to the surrounding winegrowing settlements.
The complex was destroyed in 1632 during the Thirty Years’ War but was rebuilt and today still includes a main residential building, fragments of the curtain wall, a corner tower, a castle barn, and a courtyard garden, with parts of the older structure now also integrated into or hidden by more modern houses.
