Burg Stahlberg
Germany, Germany
Burg Stahlberg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin above Steeg, a district of Bacharach on Germany's Middle Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, built around 1157-1170 by the Archbishopric of Cologne to secure the Viertäler region alongside nearby Stahleck and Fürstenberg castles.
Transferred as a fief to the Wittelsbach Palatines in 1243, the sprawling complex with its dual bergfried towers, ring wall on a rocky spur, and once-extensive outer bailey endured noble disputes until destruction by Swedish troops in 1631 and French forces in 1689 during the Thirty Years' and Palatine Succession Wars.
Ongoing preservation efforts highlight its intact 12th-14th century layout amid vineyards, offering hikers panoramic Rhine views as one of the area's oldest fortifications.
