Burg Stein
Biblis, Germany, Germany
Burg Stein near Biblis, Germany, is the ruin of a medieval lowland castle, also known as Zullestein or Zullenstein, originally built by Romans around 350 AD as a stone fort (Burgus) to secure ship landings between the Rhine and Weschnitz rivers.
It later served Franks as a harbor, passed to Lorsch Abbey in 806, became a market site by 995, and from 1232 acted as an administrative center for the Bishops of Worms before expansions by the Electoral Palatinate around 1500.
Besieged in the Thirty Years' War, burned by Spaniards in 1631, and ordered demolished in 1657, its foundations were rediscovered in 1957 during oil drilling and excavated in the 1970s; today, the atmospheric remnants in Steiner Forest offer a short hike with info panels for families.
