Burg Tannenberg
Nentershausen, Germany, Germany
Burg Tannenberg is a well-preserved medieval spur castle ruin perched on a mountain spur above Nentershausen in Hesse, Germany, built around 1349 by Ludwig I von Baumbach on the site of an earlier fortress to guard trade routes like the Via Regia.
Featuring a long rectangular layout with a narrow inner courtyard, defensive towers, stone walls, and a vaulted cellar beneath the Erbenstein tower, it changed hands multiple times after 1360, passing from Hersfeld Abbey to Hessian landgraves before gradual decline.
Repurchased by the Baumbach family in 1903 and transferred to the Verein der Freunde des Tannenberg in 1984, the site now hosts the annual Burgfest with reenactments, medieval crafts, music, and food, serving as a cultural hub on the Werra-Burgen-Steig hiking trail.
