Burg Tecklenburg
Tecklenburg, Germany, Germany
Burg Tecklenburg in Tecklenburg, Germany, is a ruined hilltop castle from around 1100, built by the counts of Tecklenburg on a strategic pass through the Teutoburger Wald to control trade routes and levy tolls between Lübeck, Bremen, Münster, and Cologne.
Featuring two courtyards separated by a moat and wall, a prominent pentagonal Hakenturm or Schiffsturm as its highest tower, and later expansions like bastions around 1540, it evolved into a residence under Gräfin Anna von Tecklenburg-Schwerin in the late 16th century before falling into decay by 1700.
Today the extensive ruins serve as an open-air theater venue amid scenic trails, drawing visitors for history, performances, and panoramic views over North Rhine-Westphalia.
