Burg Tittmoning
Tittmoning, Germany, Germany
Burg Tittmoning in Tittmoning, Germany, is a medieval castle first documented in 1234, built by Archbishop Eberhard II of Salzburg as a border fortress against the Bavarian town of Burghausen.
It is perched on a strategically advantageous hill with natural defenses, including a deep rift that made the castle nearly impregnable. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands multiple times, notably falling to the Bavarian king Ludwig the Bavarian in 1324 due to betrayal, but was repurchased by the Salzburg archbishops three years later.
Around 1500, significant expansions included the construction of the distinctive "Troadkasten," a large granary with a steep red brick roof and protective grilles to guard the town's valuable grain supplies. The castle was transformed into a hunting lodge in the early 17th century by Archbishop Markus Sittikus, with possible involvement by architect Santino Solari.
After the Napoleonic Wars, Tittmoning became part of Bavaria permanently in 1816. The castle has served various roles, including a museum since the mid-20th century, preserving local history and cultural heritage, and occasionally hosting exhibitions like a tannery display. Its chapel, built in 1693, contains a notable altar painting by Johann Michael Rottmayr.
The castle remains an important historic site symbolizing the region's medieval and early modern past.
