Burg Treis
Treis-Karden, Germany, Germany
Burg Treis, also known as Treis Castle or Treisburg, is a partially restored medieval hill castle ruin crowning a rocky spur above the village of Treis-Karden along Germany's Moselle River in the Cochem-Zell district of Rhineland-Palatinate, built around 1100 AD to control the strategic Flaumbach valley confluence.
Its defining landmark is the massive bergfried tower—the tallest surviving keep along the Moselle—erected between 1152 and 1169 under Archbishop Hillin of Trier after the castle fell to the Electorate following 1148 conquests and endured early destructions like Heinrich V's 1121 raid.
Passing through noble families such as the Freie von Treis, Lords of Pyrmont, and Eltz before devastation in the War of the Palatine Succession, remnants including walls, a gate, chapel, and palas now reward hikers with panoramic river views alongside the nearby Wildburg ruin, now a private residence.
