Burg Trendelburg
Trendelburg, Germany, Germany
Burg Trendelburg is a well-preserved medieval fortress towering over the town of Trendelburg in northern Hesse, Germany, built around 1306 by Count Konrad III von Schöneberg on a sandstone ridge above the Diemel River ford.
Strategically positioned where key trade routes crossed, its trapezoidal layout features a 38-meter Rapunzel Tower bergfried with 130 steps and 7-meter-thick walls, ring walls, four corner towers, a chapel with Gothic rib vaults now serving as a wedding room, and a neck ditch separating it from the fortified settlement below.
Damaged in the Thirty Years' and Seven Years' Wars, it was rebuilt as a hunting lodge before becoming the iconic Burghotel Trendelburg, linked to the Brothers Grimm's Rapunzel fairy tale due to the tower's resemblance.
