Burg Trugelrode
Neustadt, Hesse, Germany
Burg Trugelrode is a medieval hill castle ruin located about 3 kilometers west of Neustadt in Hesse, Germany. It was first mentioned in 1248 and is believed to have been built by Heinrich von Trugelnrode, a ministerial serving the Counts of Ziegenhain.
The castle consisted of a water-surrounded main building on a raised hill, likely including a timber upper structure atop stone foundations. The nearby village of Trugelrode, once associated with the castle, was abandoned by 1400, probably due to economic or military pressures, and the castle itself had fallen into disrepair by that time. The noble Trugelrode family line ended in the male line in 1459.
Today, only fragments of the castle walls, a moat, and a stone well remain, with archaeological evidence revealing the layout of the former castle and its fortifications, offering insight into the region's medieval history.
