Burg Vondern
Oberhausen, Germany, Germany
Burg Vondern in Oberhausen, Germany, is a medieval moated castle first documented in 1266 as a fortified knightly seat of the Lords of Vondern in the Osterfeld district, serving as a refuge for locals during turbulent times with its two-island layout featuring a western outer bailey and main castle connected by a stone bridge.
Expanded in the 16th century with Gothic elements like a flanked gatehouse, massive round towers named the Abortturm and Gerichtsturm, wehrgänge, and schießscharten, it functioned as a vogtei court until falling into decay by the 19th century amid industrial growth near the Zeche Vondern and A42 highway.
Acquired by Oberhausen in 1947, restored by 1995 through a Förderkreis with Bund and Land support after near-demolition threats, the site now thrives as a museum, seminar venue, and cultural hub surrounded by woods and former moats, celebrated as the Ruhr's oldest profane Gothic structure.
