Burg Wendelstein
Kaiserpfalz, Germany, Germany
Burg Wendelstein is a historic castle ruin perched on a 30-meter-high gypsum rock overlooking the Unstrut River near Memleben in the Kaiserpfalz municipality, Germany.
First documented in 1312, it served as a fortified border stronghold for the Saxons against the Franks, with evidence of earlier Bronze Age settlement from archaeological finds. Over centuries, it was expanded with a notable Romanesque chapel—whose remnants remain visible—and converted into a residential palace in the 16th century.
Featuring an imposing preserved north wing; it gained fame for horse breeding in the 18th century before partial restoration in the 1980s amid a deep surrounding moat.
