Burg Ziegenberg
Witzenhausen, Germany, Germany
Burg Ziegenberg, also known as Ziegenburg, near Witzenhausen-Ziegenhagen in Germany, is the ruin of a medieval spur castle possibly dating to the late 11th century, likely the ancestral seat of the Lords of Ziegenberg first mentioned in 1093.
Controlled by the Landgraves of Hesse from the early 14th century, it passed as a fief to Georg von Buttlar in 1494, with his son Erasmus as the last resident until 1541, after which it decayed and was partially demolished.
Today, atop the 270-meter Burgberg spur above the Werra valley, scant remnants include 1.5-meter-high walls of a 5-meter-thick square bergfried tower touched by a southern Zwinger, accessible via modern steps amid the forested Kaufungen Wald.
