Burggarten Osterspai
Osterspai, Germany, Germany
Burggarten Osterspai refers to the castle garden and remnants of a medieval moated castle (Burg Osterspai) directly on the Rhine riverbank in Osterspai, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, part of the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
Built around 1302 likely by Count Heinrich I. von Sponheim zu Tannenfels and first documented circa 1400, it served as a noble seat under imperial immediacy for families like the Lords of Liebenstein, Waldenburg, and since 1792 the Barons von Preuschen, who still own it today with surviving features including a massive mid-14th-century residential tower (extended with half-timbering in 1900), partial corner towers, and the 1267-documented St. Jacob's Chapel from a former Eberbach monastery estate.
Most structures vanished after 1673, leaving the large areal now repurposed as vineyards, a wine press house for events, and a garden hosting weddings and cultural gatherings.
