Burghügel Mark
Hamm, Germany, Germany
Burghügel Mark in Hamm, Germany, is the site of the medieval Burg Mark, a motte-and-bailey castle owned by the Counts of Berg-Altena since at least 1198 and serving as the seat of Count Adolf I von der Mark, who founded the city of Hamm in 1226.
Located in the Mark district near the Ahse River, this lowlands fortress featured a hill surrounded by moats and ramparts, but by the late 18th century, its dilapidated structures were demolished and used as a quarry for a local barracks.
Today, the well-preserved earthworks form a protected archaeological monument and recreational park with information boards, revitalized through community efforts since the 2000s.
