Burgruine Altjochenstein is the ruined remains of a small medieval castle located near Untergriesbach in Lower Bavaria, close to the Austrian border and overlooking the Danube Valley. The castle was likely built in the early 12th century and was first mentioned in historical records in 1222. It was associated with the noble Jochensteiner family and later came under the control of the Bishopric of Passau. The site appears to have been abandoned by the late medieval period and gradually fell into ruin. Today, visitors can see parts of the former residential tower, defensive ditches, and other surviving stone structures. The ruins stand on a narrow rocky spur, offering scenic views of the surrounding forests and the Danube region. Although only a small portion of the castle remains, it is a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts exploring the Untergriesbach area.
