Burgruine Altwehrda
Haunetal, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Altwehrda is a ruined lowland (Niederungsburg) castle from around 1185 located north of Wehrda in Haunetal, Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, eastern Hesse, Germany, on a 249-meter hillock by the Hirschelbach stream.
First documented in 1308 as "castrum Werdowe" when Fulda Abbey's Abbot Heinrich V pawned it to the Trümbach (Trubenbach) ministerial family—who likely built it as their original seat—it served as a refuge for Neukirchen court until destroyed in the Thirty Years' War around 1637, leaving only sparse sandstone wall remnants and a northwest tower fragment amid fields.
Once possibly a water castle with a stilled moat fed by the stream, the site now sits tree-covered and open, integrated into local trails near other Wehrda landmarks like the gothic church and Hohenwehrda Castle.
