Burgruine Auersburg
Hilders, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Auersburg is the scenic ruin of a hill castle perched on the forested southwestern slope of the 757-meter Auersberg mountain north of Hilders in Germany's Rhön region, now serving as a shelter and panoramic viewpoint at the end of a popular hiking trail.
Likely originating around 914 through a land swap with Fulda Abbey and rebuilt as a knightly seat around 1120, it passed through hands like the Hennebergers, Fulda Monastery, and Würzburg bishops, functioning more as an administrative outpost than a fortress due to its exposed forward-slope position.
Destroyed by fire during the 1525 Peasants' War, it fell into decay, was partially quarried for local buildings like Hilders church until protected in 1848, and today retains mainly its ring wall with gun slits, a neck ditch, earthen ramparts, and a 1960s observation tower amid a monument to poet Julius Türck.
