Burgruine Bornstedt
Bornstedt, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Bornstedt, also called Schweinsburg, is a medieval hilltop castle ruin east of Bornstedt village in Saxony-Anhalt's Mansfeld-Südharz district, Germany, on the Hornburger Sattel ridge near Eisleben.
First mentioned around 880 as Brunstediburg in the Hersfeld Tithe Register and possibly dating to the 8th century as a border fortress between Thuringia and Saxony, it hosted Emperor Heinrich V.'s troops in 1115 during the Saxon wars and passed through owners like Esico II.
von Bornstedt by 1120 before the Counts of Mansfeld held it from 1301 to 1780, using it as a residence from 1502 with expansions and a park. Named for a legend of a pig alerting defenders to attackers, the site retains a prominent bergfried tower, chapel-like remnants, and walls, having fallen into decay by 1615 after the Mansfeld line's financial decline.
