Burgruine Forstenberg
Regenstauf, Germany
Burgruine Forstenberg near Regenstauf, Germany, is a medieval hill castle ruin built around 1295 by the Archbishop of Cologne. It was strategically positioned on a hill to protect the territory of the Electorate of Cologne and control the border area with the County of Arnsberg.
The castle saw multiple periods of destruction and rebuilding in the early 14th century during conflicts involving regional counts and archbishops. By the mid-14th century, its military importance declined, and the noble Fürstenberg family, who served as castellans, moved their seat elsewhere.
Today, only remnants of the stone structures and medieval ring-shaped ramparts survive, located in a forested area and protected as a historic site. The ruins speak to the castle’s role in medieval territorial defense and its connection to the influential Fürstenberg family.
