Burgruine GLAMBECK Denkmal
Fehmarn, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Glambeck is the atmospheric ruin of a medieval moated castle in the Burgtiefe area on Fehmarn island, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, constructed in 1210 by Danish King Valdemar II as a strategic brick fortress measuring 53 by 36 meters, surrounded by a wide water-filled ditch and earthen rampart.
Serving as the island's political heart through the 13th and 14th centuries, it hosted lavish feasts, key peace talks like the 1307 Glambeker Vergleich, and the 1320 Fehmarn Landrecht issuance, but became a flashpoint in Danish-Holstein conflicts, suffering repeated sieges including a devastating 1420 raid by Erik of Pomerania that razed much of it.
Abandoned after final destruction in the Thirty Years' War around 1628, its remnants were buried under sand until a 1872 storm surge uncovered them, now preserved as a free-access historical site amid scenic coastal dunes.
