Burgruine Güntersburg
Germany, Germany
Burgruine Güntersburg is a large medieval castle ruin on Kohlberg hill above Güntersberge in Germany's Harz Mountains, spanning about 3 hectares with a fortified settlement possibly predating the modern village.
Built in the 11th or 12th century based on excavation finds like pottery and iron tools, it was first mentioned around 1326 as "Slot auf dem Kohlberge" under Lords of Kneitlingen and Counts of Stolberg, but lay devastated by 1600 with only gate tower foundations and ramparts visible today.
Legends tell of robber barons whose ghostly victims haunt the site, drawing hikers to its panoramic Selke Valley views amid northern Harz forests.
