Burgruine Hardenberg
Nörten-Hardenberg, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Hardenberg is a striking double castle ruin perched on a rocky outcrop with steep cliffs near Nörten-Hardenberg in Lower Saxony, Germany.
Dating back to around 1100 as a hilltop fortress built by the Archbishopric of Mainz to control key trade routes, it split into the older Hinterhaus (Mainz House) and northern Vorderhaus around 1409 due to inheritance among the Lords of Hardenberg, separated by a deep ditch and ring wall.
Though damaged over centuries and partially replaced by a nearby Baroque palace after 1698 collapses, its well-preserved sandstone remnants offer panoramic views and guided tours today.
