Burgruine Haselstein
Nüsttal, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Haselstein is a ruined medieval hill castle on a steep 434-meter basalt cone next to Haselstein village in Nüsttal, Fulda district, eastern Hesse, Germany.
Dating to around 1100 and first mentioned in 1113, it was built by the Lords of Haselstein, conquered by Fulda Abbey's abbot in 1119 to curb banditry, and expanded as a key abbey stronghold before falling into decay by the 16th century after a new administrative house was built below.
Today, scant remnants like partial enclosure walls and two sides of the former gate tower remain amid Rhön forests, accessible via hiking trails like the Premiumweg "Ulmenstein" for rewarding views over the Hessian landscape.
