Burgruine Hohenburg
Homburg, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Hohenburg is a medieval castle ruin located above the town of Homburg in Saarland, Germany, serving as the seat of the Counts of Homburg from the 12th to 15th centuries.
After passing to the Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken in 1449, it was rebuilt as a Renaissance palace in the late 16th century and later fortified into a stronghold by Vauban under Louis XIV following its French capture in 1679.
The fortifications were dismantled in 1697 and 1714, and the ruins were quarried for materials in the 18th century, with partial excavations and restorations beginning in 1981.
