Burgruine Hohenurach near Bad Urach, Germany, was built in the 11th century by the Counts of Urach as a fortified castle to protect the developing town below.

It became a significant stronghold and was expanded and modernized multiple times, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries, featuring thick fortifications and adapting to evolving military technology. The castle served as a prison in later years and was repeatedly involved in conflicts, including withstanding a siege during the Thirty Years' War.

In 1694, it suffered a severe explosion caused by a lightning strike hitting the powder tower, leading to significant destruction. By 1761, the castle was abandoned as a military fortress, and parts of it were dismantled for building materials. Today, the ruins of Hohenurach remain a landmark symbolizing Bad Urach's medieval heritage, with large sections like walls, towers, and dungeons still accessible to visitors.

The site is open to the public and offers scenic views, hiking opportunities, and a glimpse into the region's rich history.
