Burgruine Isenburg
Bad Schlema, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Isenburg is a ruined medieval spur castle overlooking the Zwickauer Mulde valley in Bad Schlema's Wildbach district, Saxony, Germany, with archaeological evidence of 12th-century origins possibly as a watchpost during Ore Mountains settlement.
Named after "Vas" suggesting nearby iron mining or an "impregnable" stronghold, its 51x33-meter site featured outer/inner baileys, a 9-meter-diameter bergfried tower with 3-meter walls in herringbone stonework, and a defensive ditch, but was violently destroyed by the 14th century with no documented history beyond 1738 oral tales of a "robber castle."
Exposed by 1930s Reich Labour Service and restored in 1993, the ramparts and tower base now form a hiking-accessible monument amid local folklore.
